If At First You Don't Succeed, It Means You Screwed Up!

December 11, 2008 | Blog, news

Many companies I work with mention how many times they've made the same mistake again and again. Why would they admit to something like that? If at first you don't succeed, it means you screwed up! So what will it take not to screw up? Try something different, or at least listen to or explore different options until something works.

This is where most consultants and strategists are worth their weight in gold. They can identify and understand the mindset that prohibits forward thinking, but also have the experience and education to assist in identifying potential solutions. Entrepreneurs have a tendency not to want to listen to others because the business is usually thier baby.

Let me ask you a question...if your baby were to touch a hot stove and you told the baby "no" don't do that you'll screw up, wouldn't that make sense? Sure it would. Now if a consultant or strategist told you not to do the same thing over and over again or you'll screw up, what is preventing you from listening. It's very simple...it's EGO! Babies and young children don't have egos. Adults and entrepreneurs do. You'll touch that stove top 100 times before you finally say "I screwed up" I probably shouldn't touch the stove top again. Kind of silly when you think about it, isn't it.

For companies and professionals to grow, they have to check their egos at the door and allow for alternative thinking to prevail. Especially as it relates to turning previous failures into successes. Yes, consistent effort and a "never say die" attitude makes winners, but not learning along the way will eventually come back to haunt you. Cheers!
