Too may times we confine ourselves to our own environment, our own set of circumstances and our own fate. Why? It's that whole "in the box/out of the box" thing. How do you know if you are where you want to be in business or life? TAKE A ROAD TRIP!
If you're from the midwest or northeast, head south or west and talk to local business groups. If you're from the south or west, visit the midwest or northeast and learn from those who have lost revenues, employees, spirit, morale and their business. It's not difficult to find the hundreds of thousands of professionals who had it all years ago and have nothing now.
I travel by air quite a bit. Look at the faces of those in the airports in the midwest (Detroit, Cleveland, Bufflalo) and then look at the faces of the travelers who originate from Charlotte, Jacksonville, San Jose, and San Diego. What a difference! As a business leader, you need to explore the differences of those from progressive, active areas, compared to those from depressed and "rusted" out areas.
